Could you see Renee Zellweger in a Broadway musical?

Posted by: AnyaS 08:47 pm EDT 05/06/15

Cue jokes about her altered appearance and weak singing, but when SiriusXM played Renee Zellweger's version of Roxie I remembered how much I liked her in Chicago. Yes, her singing voice lacks power, but if Sarah Jessica Parker's Once Upon a Mattress performance on the Tony Awards was representative of how she sounded every night, and having seen Christina Applegate whisper sing in Sweet Charity, the idea of Renee headlining a musical isn't so off the wall. I've not set the bar high with my examples, but those examples are for the naysayers who think she wouldn't be cast in a show that requires her to sing 6 days a week. And maybe producers wouldn't take a chance on her but if they did... any ideas for a good vehicle for her? With her film career stalled, who knows, she may well commit to a long run, especially if it gave her a career a nice boost.

A play, yes. She's an excellent actress.

A musical...no.

Agreed she's an excellent actress but I've never seen her work on stage. I did see her in a performance in an unreleased film since her facial surgery and she is still an excellent actress though almost unrecognizable facially though not vocally which remains a large part of her magic. Can she use and project those vocal qualities in stage work so that they feel as spontaneous as her film work? I don't know but if I were her or her posse, that's what I'd be working on.

I was at her Inside the Actor's Studio and you could barely hear her. That works on camera but not onstage.

Rene is an adorable, undisciplined charmer in the right film role, but. .

. . . she is really not a song and dance gal. Thanks to Rob Marshall she appeared to be doing much more than she actually was. Maybe a revival of SAIL AWAY or THE GIRL WHO CAME TO SUPPER (or THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER) could work. I find her very appealing in a way, but probably not on the stage. At this point, I am the only washed up has- been who has not played Roxie Hart. buzzie, still hoping for the right role and the strength to play it

Now you playing Roxie would get me to see Chicago again, Buzzie. :)

I love Renee's performance in "Chicago" she really should have won the Oscar that year. She wasn't a singer or dancer yet she pulled it off and even though she cheated on her husband, murdered her lover and lied about being pregnant - you couldn't help root her.

But can I see her in a musical on Broadway - No

I never rooted for Renee in the film. It was obvious she couldn't really sing or dance. I think she would be good in a comedy on stage.

She was terrific in the film of "Chicago" but the musical part were filmed in bits and pieces at least as far as the dancing; when it came time to sing the Oscar-nominated song live at the Academy Awards, she declined. Queen Latifah did it live with Catherine Zeta-Jones instead. Perhaps Zellweger might try a non-musical or a musical in a regional theater first if she doesn't think she has the seasoning yet to pull off a musical role on Broadway.

In other words, if the precedent has been set for lousy casting, it's perfectly fine to keep doing it just because it's been done before?

She wouldn't sing the nominated song from Chicago on the Oscars because of crippling stage fright. Makes Broadway seem unlikely.

I don't know. She also did some gutsy if more folk-rock singing in a movie called My Own Love Song. Singing one song on the Oscars with the whole world watching can actually be more intimidating than singing songs you have rehearsed in the context of a show in which you are performing. Plus, she was a huge star at the time of Chicago. She isn't working nearly as much any more and she might not be able to afford to have stage fright.

I loved her as Roxie. I thought she was the best performer in the film, even if her co-star won an Oscar and she didn't. I would love to see her on Broadway, whether she's in a musical or a play.

Yeah, I agree with you on that. Singing on the Oscars has been unkind to some strong performers. When Kristin Chenoweth sang a song from Enchanted, many in my family groaned because they wanted to hear Amy Adams sing again. I told them they would all change their minds once Chenoweth opened her mouth. And then she sang - poorly. It had to be her worst vocal performance I've ever seen her give. The last note was especially painful.Although my family knows who she is now, they still jokingly give me grief about her performance at that Oscars. What a stinker of a performance. :(
Mike makes a good point about Renee's stage fright. It is such an obvious fact about her that I can't believe I overlooked it.

And who could ever forget (or want to remember) Ann Reinking's "Against All Odds" at the Oscars?
