ZORBA! Tonight

Posted by: sergius 11:16 pm EDT 05/06/15

Miscast and underpowered. Turturro is entirely too slight a presence for Zorba and he can't sing. This might not have been a problem if a choice had been made to have him speak the songs, but as it is, he tries to sing them and whatever vigor he has just drains right out of him when he does. He sounds like a sweet, earnest amateur and this, of course, is completely wrong for the part. Mazzie, who's a wonderful singer, nonetheless strains to convince as an earth mother type. Wannamaker is also out of her depth here with a wavy, wandering accent and, again, no singing voice to speak of. Since the show has very little narrative momentum to start with--it relies mostly upon a derivative local color palette with accompanying character "types"--these casting miscalculations make a big difference. The show's wan and listless when it should be robust (there is, after all, an exclamation point in its title).
