In Murray's review:

"...a tavern-philosophy framing device that finds its perpetrator, known only as The Leader (Marin Mazzie), and her acolytes weaving into and out of (and comment upon) the action..."

From Mazzie's Muse-like costume, this doesn't sound like the gritty, Prince-created original premise. Yet the "tavern philosophy" comment suggests something similar.

Thoughts?

The first half of "Life Is" is cut. Any sort of framing device is left to the audience to infer. The show begins with the chorus dancing silently onstage, Mazzie comes out and starts singing "Life is what you do/while you're waiting to die."

I don't know that you need the original Prince Bouzouki circle, but if you're not going to do that, at least have some concept, some point of view on the material. From what I saw last night, Walter Bobbie has none.

Yes, when I said "half" I figured that everyone who knew the score would understand what I meant. Obviously, not half of the song is gone.

I'm sorry there's no bouzouki circle. It did a lot to establish the setting and atmosphere.

They're calling her "The Leader," rather than "The Woman," as she was dubbed in '83; I had hopes that some semblance of a storytelling premise was preserved or reminted.

Like I said, it is very much left up to the audience to infer. As the show is at Encores, half the time the chorus seems like standard "merry villagers" (or not so merry in this case) and the other half turns into commentators on the action with no rhyme or reason why.

Cutting the opening and first half of "Life Is" greatly hurts the show imo.

The video clips on TheaterMania.com look good to me. Especially Zoe!
