Like I said, it is very much left up to the audience to infer. As the show is at Encores, half the time the chorus seems like standard "merry villagers" (or not so merry in this case) and the other half turns into commentators on the action with no rhyme or reason why. Cutting the opening and first half of "Life Is" greatly hurts the show imo.
