Nathan Lane seemed to never have a very good rapport with Letterman. I like both, but the two of them having a conversation always felt a little awkward to me.

I think their conversations were some of the most heavily scripted on the show - NL always came with prepared material. But he must have done something right to be one of the most frequent guests, and one of his guest hosts when Dave was ill...I wouldn't be surprised to learn they've never talked off the air, though.
"Dead inside" is nothing - the premise of Martin Short's tribute song last night was that Dave was really dead!

I've always loved Lane and Letterman's report. They were like a well-oiled machine, and they seemed to be kindred spirits.

Speaking of Lane and Letterman and Short ... the "She Loves Me" bit Lane (and Short) did, where they hold the note and leave the theater, was my favorite of all time (and seeing Josh Grisetti hold a note from the box seats to the stage reminded me of it - maybe the same note).
