I think their conversations were some of the most heavily scripted on the show - NL always came with prepared material. But he must have done something right to be one of the most frequent guests, and one of his guest hosts when Dave was ill...I wouldn't be surprised to learn they've never talked off the air, though. "Dead inside" is nothing - the premise of Martin Short's tribute song last night was that Dave was really dead!
