Some (but not all) theaters will have a girl or guy out front before the show selling the souvenir programs -- however, then you have to pay cash and sometimes they don't have the plastic slipcases with them.

I've never really had a problem being let into the theater before or after a show to buy merchandise, but I don't recommend sneaking in -- just ask an employee outside and tell him that you saw the show previously and now you want to buy some merchandise -- I've never been refused although some guards will ask for your driver's license and will hold it until you get back -- if it's a sold-out show and the crowd is insane, he may make you wait until things subside.
