FUN HOME/PARIS/ROTTEN

Posted by: bruceb 04:57 pm EDT 05/07/15

Last month before the shows opened I was pretty sure that SOMETHING ROTTEN would win the Best Musical Tony. I figured FUN HOME might be too serious and not get the "road" vote or some of the major producer votes as there weren't as many producers, etc. on FUN HOME. After they opened, with the reviews, I was leaning to FUN HOME taking home the Tony. SOMETHING ROTTEN didn't seem to carry its initial great response as well. I also completely discounted AMERICAN IN PARIS. But NOW after its reviews and press and box office, I can see PARIS winning the Tony.

I don't think I have ever been more confused about what name will be read on Tony night!

Thoughts?

after seeing AIP it should be discounted, in my opinion...
I had to search the Tony site but did find the mission statement, sort of, under the Antoinette Perry tab.
"The American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards® got their start in 1947 when the Wing established an awards program to celebrate excellence in the theatre."
The quality of being extremely good seemed missing for me.

for me it's a case that I'm very glad people are working, but it's nominations remind me why I don't like awards.

That is true! Since I'm this confused this year, it would be hysterical if they said THE VISIT when the envelope opens.

But I think in the case of THE VISIT, It's Just An Honor To Be Nominated!!!

PS. I'm pretty expert in picking winners... but I would not gamble this year!

I'm pretty sure the race is between An American in Paris in Fun Home. But maybe I'm underestimating the appeal of musical comedy to Tony voters in which case Something Rotten could win.
