| Doesn't this usually come out much closer to the time the awards are presented, usually in a side-by-side with Isherwood? (I assume that's how it will appear in print, but this still seems early.) I'll withhold comment except to say that he clearly has not gotten over his love affair with Honeymoon in Vegas. | |

| Naturally, both Brantley and Isherwood leave out Best Choreography. It's sad that Dance always seems to take a back seat in most predictions and otherwise. Especially in a season so rich in great dance. | |

| The correction at the end of both Brantley's and Isherwood's picks is the best part. Both columns went to print predicting a Tony win for "Melen Mirren." | |

| It's a little silly and pointless that he lists people who were not Tony eligible. | |

| I agree, that always frustrates me. It's as if he's saying that the Broadway theaters kept the show out, rather than simply understanding the show was not produced on Broadway. "Should have" only works if they "could have". | |

| I don't think it's so bad to call attention to the fact that sometimes the best shows/performances of the year don't take place in the Tony-sanctioned area of real estate. I think NYT readers are intelligent enough to grasp why they didn't meet eligibility requirements. | |

| I don't see why they can't add an extra line for that. I don't think it's fair that all the people or shows not picked as one of the few nominees also has to compete for a spotlight from the Times with every other good show that was in NYC that year. | |

| I don't think critics should have to consider "fairness" as a criterion when singling out the performances they most enjoyed. And if that means that Cush Jumbo gets a bit of extra "spotlight" from the Times, I'm really okay with that. | |

| Maybe ... but why, then, doesn't he do a whole column on notable shows that aren't eligible for Tonys (or does he?)? | |

| You mean, why doesn't he take steps to assuage a tiny number of Internet posters who don't like how he has chosen to organize his own column? Hmmm, I wonder... :-D | |

| No, I meant - (And, yes, it's a rhetorical question. He can write about what he wants to write about), but it sounds like he's assuaging a lot of people by writing a "should, will" column about the Tonys. If he thinks better shows aren't eligible, why not write more about them? | |

| In 2014, the "nominations should be" column ran on May 8. The winners' predictions will go out closer to the ceremony. | |

| The headline suggests that it's his thoughts on potential nominations, but the content is primarily his predictions for actual winners. | |

| Bruce, Brantley also thinks Side Show should have been nominated (as do I which I assume will compel the committee to immediately insert it as a nominee.) It's interesting that he suggests that EITHER Davie or Padgett should have been nominated as Best Actress in a Musical, which is exactly why I argued previously that they should have been nominated as a unit. | |
