The rule here is extremely confusing and quoted directly below. My take on the rules is that if a show like Skylight wins Best Revival, the producers can buy a medallion for the author, so Hare would get a Tony (although his name would not be on it). If the winning show was not produced on Broadway at some point after the inception of the Tonys, then the author automatically gets a Tony award, paid for by the Tonys people.
Does that sound correct to others? The second paragraph is new for this year. My personal feeling is that the Tonys people should give the Tony to all authors of winning revivals.
It's unclear to me from the wording of the paragraphs if the authors in the Tony-provided circumstance are official winners. It sounds like the authors of previously eligible winners are not official winners.
(j) The Producer(s) of the Best Revival of a Play or Musical may purchase
additional Medallions for the sole purpose of having such Medallions be given to the author(s)
and, if any, composer(s) of such production, and/or their respective official representative(s);
provided, that such additional Medallions shall be inscribed only with the category name (Best
Revival of a Play or Best Revival of a Musical), the title of the production and the year of the
award; and provided, further, that each such Medallion shall be delivered by the Tony Awards
Administration Committee directly to the intended recipient.
(k) The author(s) of a Play and the author(s) and composer(s) of a Musical which
was determined to be eligible in a Best Revival of a Play or Musical category in accordance with
language contained in Rule 2(h) herein, but did not have any prior presentation on Broadway;
and who are living at the time that the production receives a Tony Award in the Best Revival
Play or Musical category, will be entitled to receive a Medallion, along with the Producer(s) of
the Best Revival Play or Musical; provided, that such Medallions shall be inscribed only with the
category name (Best Revival of a Play or Best Revival of a Musical), the title of the production
and the year of the award; and provided, further, that each such Medallion shall be delivered by
the Tony Awards Administration Committee directly to the intended recipient.
