Is it like The Brady Bunch to some people??

As noted, the appeal of this low grade sticom eludes me. So it's interesting to see folks grow defensive and protective about something that...well, I think the poster who cited MURDER AT THE HOWARD JOHNSON'S really nailed it.

Does ISBY have the appeal of old "Brady Bunch" reruns, i.e. it's awful, you know it's awful, but in it's inept, cornball way it please the "inner child" of some theatregoers? I mean sometimes you just want cheese. And ISBY is certainly the cheesiest show in years.

It can be difficult to discuss a show you don't like without implying criticism of the taste of those who do like it. Or going beyond implying. I think a line gets crossed when someone writes the kind of stuff written by Draeigon in this thread.

If you want to criticize the taste of those who like a particular show, you might as well go ahead and do it directly and just state outright that anyone who likes this junk has bad taste.

Of course, one trouble with doing that is that you probably like some of the same stuff that person likes.

We used to sometimes get comments on this site like "Well, if you like this show, I bet you can't wait for the next revival of Grease." Haven't seen anything quite like that in a long time, but what Draeigon wrote comes pretty close. It did make me feel defensive. How could it not?

FWIW, I've never shared in the love that many have for The Brady Bunch and I've neither seen nor read Murder at the Howard Johnson's.

But I think now I want to. I think perhaps I might end up waiting to produce it in rep with some Sarah Kane and some Strindberg.

What difference does it make?

Why can't people accept and respect that people see different things in shows? Instead of labeling shows bad and those who have a different take needing some justification.

I'll bet you like a show I think is crap. So what?

I don't think I have ever known a person who did not love some play, film, TV show etc that was generally regarded as crap. And I have a long list of them that I consider crap but dearly love.

I think there is something to this, although I don't think it's "awful". I also don't think Brady Bunch reruns are awful :-)

To add a new analogy, I was thinking about restaurants. Not every meal is dinner at Per Se. And not every meal is TRYING to be that. Some nights don't you want a more casual dinner?

I thought ISBY was fun and sweet. I don't require that I everything I see be aiming for the pulitzer.
