Has the Takarazuka Theater of Japan ever been discussed here before?

Posted by: jimvar1 04:25 pm EDT 05/08/15

If not, and for those who don't know, it is the all-female professional theater company in Japan...and they mount full-scale adaptations of Broadway musicals.

VERY, VERY L...-friendly!!

The company has come up occasionally in the past, but I think it's been some time now.

I wish I could find the clip of "A Handbag Is Not a Proper Mother" from their production of Ernest in Love, although other clips from that production are on youtube. They sometimes do lesser-known musicals, not just the famous hits. I think there used to be clips of their Coco on youtube, but I can't find them now.

Takarazuka Revue Company has a long history and tradition in Japan. They have their own musical school (two years) and it is very competitive to get in, and unless you are a graduate of this school, you cannot be admitted to Takarazuka Revue Company. But once you become a company member, no matter how small the role would be, you will be able to perform in a show at least three to four times a year. Typically, the top stars "graduate" from the Company by the age of mid 30's.

BTW the actress (Yuka Wao) in Phantom is married to Frank Wildhorn now. For some reasons, Wildhorn's shows are performed often in Japan.
