was the choreography in American in Paris meant to be retro to the ballet style of the post-war period?

Am no expert on dance...but I thought Wheedon employed both stripes of dance: modern/theatrical for the expository sequences; retro indeed for the "presentational" numbers; and just classic dance for the Jerry-Lise pas de deux.

I think Best Musical is between AMERICAN IN PARIS and THE VISIT.
