I think the opportunity to hear Eddie Sauter's full orchestrations played live is a good enough reason to offer 1776. What I most appreciate about Encores! is a chance to hear these scores as they were originally heard.

I have to guess that's the justification, but it still seems a slightly odd choice (even though I love Eddie Sauter perhaps above all other Broadway orchestrators). This will mean that they will have done all four musicals that were nominated for the 1968-69 best musical Tony.

Agreed. The Broadway revival of 1776 had many things to recommend it, but the orchestra was unacceptably small. Similarly, I saw a wonderful production at Ford's Theater in D.C. a few years back with an excellent cast that included Brooks Ashmanskas and Robert Cuccioli, but again the orchestra was small. (They don't have room for a large orchestra there.) And although I'm pretty sure the Paper Mill production had quite a large orchestra, that production was flawed in other respects.
