In addition to the many films and television shows in which she appeared, I will never forget her as the 60-something daughter of the 80-something Jessica Tandy, having an liaison with the 20-something Maxwell Caulfield in SALONIKA at The Public in the mid-'80s. (David Straithairn and Thomas Hill rounded out the cast.)

She was a sensitive, wry and intelligent actress and I'm glad she was given a lovely cameo in HYDE PARK ON HUDSON as Sara Delano to Bill Murray's FDR.

Like Rosemary Murphy and Marian Seldes, she was at the top of that group of actresses who never quite became stars but who gave life to some of the best roles their generation was offered and who enlivened and illuminated the New York theatre scene for many long and rich years.

Where does one start? For me, with "Mornings and Seven" and her eccentric, unsentimental, brilliant Penny in "You Can't Take it With You." Two performances that were damn near definitive. But I loved her near misses and even, to some, critical failures (Bracknell in "Earnest" -- imperfect but wildly funny). And in the smallest roles -- Hoffman's mother in "The Graduate," or the teacher in "Picnic" (stage and screen) -- she was perfection.

She contributed to "Sticks and Bones" one of the most daring performances in the New York theater, ever.

How much did we love her, how much will we miss her.
