Patti LuPone - Last night at the Shimmel Center

Posted by: Shutterbug 07:37 pm EDT 05/10/15

Patti was in fine form last night at Pace University's Shimmel Center for the Arts. It's a lovely venue, and she filled every inch of it with her full, rich sound. She performed a diverse collection of songs by Sondheim, Weill and others that referenced "far away places" - the show's title. Her voice is as strong and expressive as ever. Her well-rehearsed between song patter was funny and warm. Over the course of two glorious hours, she took the audience on a world tour from Peking to Berlin to Paris. Of course her travels also brought us to Argentina, and she belted out Buenos Aires to thunderous applause during her encore. She mentioned that she would have loved to have played Piaf. She would have been great. I am so looking forward to her upcoming appearance in the new Douglas Carter Beane comedy at Lincoln Center, SHOWS FOR DAYS.

In short, it was a thrilling night with one of our very best singing actors.
