WHAT I DID LAST SUMMER this afternoon

Posted by: schauspieler 07:53 pm EDT 05/10/15

I LOVED this play, an early A.R. Gurney work from the early 80's. Unless you are burned out on coming-of-age stories, don't miss this funny, wise and moving production with a group of terrific actors. Seeing Noah Galvin as the 14 year old Charlie (Gurney) reminded me of the experience of seeing the young Matthew Broderick in TORCH SONG TRILOGY and BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS. Galvin has a major career ahead of him - he is so charming and comfortable on stage, so full of life and unafraid to go emotionally big, confident that his choices will always work. And then there is Kristine Nielsen whose role as the troubled and inspiring Anna Trumbull is a gift to her - she is so perfect in it - and to us who get to enjoy a performance that finds her at her quirky and lovable best. Carolyn McCormick, too, gets a chance to shine as Charlie's mother. Even the annoying choice to project stage directions on a giant typewritten page couldn't ruin the otherwise fine direction of a wonderful play brought so beautifully to life by this fine ensemble.
