ZHIVAGO'S Last Performance

Posted by: mamaleh 08:29 pm EDT 05/10/15

Having celebrated Mother's Day yesterday with my family because of work schedules, I was free to catch the last performance of DR. ZHIVAGO today. I thought they might do a general rush for the closing day, and I was proved correct: $35 for a 7th row orch seat, only a little to the side. Excellent view.

The production was definitely lavish --maybe a little overly produced in spots -- and much of the music was listenable, although too many songs in Act II seemed derivative of each other. But although I wouldn't call it worthy of "best" awards, it was nowhere near the stinker I'd been led to believe. Tam Mutu has a gorgeous bari-tenor; I hope he returns to the NY stage someday. Tom Hewitt, Kelli Barrett and Paul Alexander Nolan gave it their all. Perhaps it was thought to be LES MIZ-light?

I was wondering whether there would be a curtain speech. There was not. But the cast received many bouquets and the accompanying applause and whistles were thunderous.

A shame to see that large, able cast out of work.

I only wish I had been there with you to glean a few nuggets from the final hours. I find Mutu very Sharrif-like from his photos. Oh well, somehow, some day, somewhere (else) my love, buzzie, looking more like Omar than Tam these days

Buzzie, Mr. Mutu (sounds like an old Peter Lorre movie, doesn't it?) did indeed remind me physically of Omar Sharif.

Wish you had been there with me, too, Buzzie! Be well.

Lessons learned: Have a coherent storyline, don't have unnecessary loud booming gunshot noises throughout, and don't show someone vomiting on stage. It was simply disgusting to watch the vomit. Whose idea was that???

Don't try to be "Les Miser-russians"!

Isn't that the real lesson? That LES MIZ is a genuine phenom because it arrived and was embraced for being unlike anything else prior/at the time? Cloning its theatrical values via an archaeological dig through supposedly comparable epic novels invited comparisons (odious) and cynical consumer disinterest.

First time I recall that action being used in any sort of film or other medium was Jill Clayburgh throwing up in "An Unmarried Woman". It was gross then and it was stupid and gross here, and rather unintentionally funny too.
