What do you do to prevent coughing?

Posted by: PatrickHSF 09:14 pm EDT 05/10/15

I'm curious what others do to prevent coughing in the theater? I have a bit of an acid reflux problem which tends to irritate my throat and which can be exacerbated by dry indoor conditions.

Chloroseptic lozenges are strong, numbing and effective but come in noisy aluminum foil packaging and need to be 'popped' out of the packaging. Ricolas are a bit less noisy but can still be distracting.

Theaters ask patrons to unwrap lozenges and candy but how do you hold sticky lozenges which get even stickier and messier due to your body temperature? Putting unwrapped lozenges in a pocket is not a good idea, they collect lint, stick to fabric and stick together.

Are there cough drop brands sold unwrapped in a tube like LifeSavers?

Water can help a bit but sipping continually can be distracting. I'd rather have a good strong lozenge or two to get through an act. And there is no where to place a water bottle where it can easily re retrieved.

I'm curious what others do and what brands of lozenges you use. Thanks!

If I have a cough following a chest cold, I take Robitussin cough gels about an hour before the show. They contain a fairly benign cough suppressant, dextromethorphan, which is extremely effective for me. Not sure I'd take them every time I went to a show if I had a chronic cough, but for the occasional situation when I'm in danger of erupting into a hacking fit they are a miracle.

Halls cough drops come in a Life Savers style "tube," but each drop is individually wrapped. Maybe a small pill box?

I used to take a roll of Life Savers, but they could get kind of sticky and hard to separate. Recently I have been taking a half dozen or so of the Werther hard candies. Although they are individually wrapped, I try to remember to make a small tear in at least a couple of them which makes it easy to get them out quietly during a performance and keep them someplace handy (a jacket pocket, a side pocket of a purse). I also try to take them out during noisier parts of a performance. If I am really concerned about needing them (due to cold or something) I may just keep a couple in my hand during the performance. I also keep a bottle of water at least half full with me.

if attending "Zhivago" (no longer an option) or belch or pass gas if at "Shrek" (also no longer an option) or open the top of one or two, keep in wrapper in your shirt or pant pocket. Carefully, slowly, retrieve from shirt or pant pocket. Place in mouth, suck. Suck may be an appropriate gesture if you are attending many current Broadway productions. Just be subtle.
