CAROLE SHORENSTEIN HAYS UNVEILS PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF SAN FRANCISCO’S CURRAN THEATRE HISTORIC THEATER WILL UNDERGO EXTENSIVE RENOVATION AHEAD OF ITS OFFICIAL REOPENING IN EARLY 2017

SHORENSTEIN HAYS SETS GOAL TO MAKE THE CURRAN “A BEACON FOR THEATRICAL ARTISTS AND AUDIENCES THE WORLD OVER”

“CURRAN: UNDER CONSTRUCTION” A SPECIALLY CURATED FESTIVAL OF INTIMATE, ON STAGE PROGRAMMING WILL BEGIN THIS MONTH

– Carole Shorenstein Hays, the Tony® Award winning producer and San Francisco’s leading theatrical presenter, has announced plans for the future of the Curran theatre. Following an extensive renovation project, that is currently underway, the historic theater will reopen as a full-sized venue in early 2017. During the renovation, a special festival of intimate and non-traditional programming, called “Curran: Under Construction,” will be presented. Throughout “Curran: Under Construction,” commencing later this month, audiences will enter through the Curran’s stage door alleyway (immortalized in the classic film All About Eve) and be placed on stage alongside the action.

“This endeavor is inspired by the spirit of the Bay Area, which is on the cutting edge of so many world-shaping industries,” Ms. Shorenstein Hays said in a statement. “It’s my goal to create a beacon here for theatrical artists and audiences the world over. We want to take giant creative risks and, in doing so, introduce new audiences to the power of the theater.”

Shorenstein Hays will be scouring the world’s stages, including London and Asia, in curating the post-construction programming for the Curran.

“‘Curran: Under Construction’ will allow us to utilize this great house during its renovation, and to stage exciting works in new ways,” she added. “When we reopen as a full-sized venue, we will continue our commitment to programming daring and excellent works that otherwise might not find their way to a major West Coast theater.”

“Curran: Under Construction,” which features an array of diverse and ground-breaking works, each with ties to the Bay Area, will kick off with The Events, beginning its four-night engagement at the Curran on Wednesday, September 23. For additional information and the entire current line-up of “Curran: Under Construction” offerings, bringing such internationally celebrated artists and companies as Dave Malloy, Taylor Mac, Geoff Sobelle, Steve Cuiffo, Stew, and Story Pirates to the Curran’s stage, please see the attached schedule. – The Tony® Award winner for Best Musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, will play the SHN Golden Gate Theatre December 1-27 in its First National Tour. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday, Sept. 18 at 10am.

Gentleman’s Guide tells the uproarious story of Monty Navarro, a distant heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession, by any means necessary. All the while, he’s got to juggle his mistress (she’s after more than just love), his fiancée (she’s his cousin but who’s keeping track?), and the constant threat of landing behind bars! Of course, it will all be worth it if he can slay his way to his inheritance… and be done in time for tea.

The most celebrated musical of the 2013-14 Broadway season, Gentleman’s Guide received ten 2014 Tony® Award nominations, eventually winning four awards: Best Musical, Direction of a Musical, Book of a Musical, and Best Costume Design. In addition, it won the Best Musical prizes from the Drama League, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle, and received a 2015 Grammy® Award nomination for Best Musical Show Album.

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder features a book and lyrics by Robert L. Freedman and music and lyrics by Steven Lutvak. Direction is by Darko Tresnjak, with choreography by Peggy Hickey. The design team includes Alexander Dodge (Scenic Design), Linda Cho (Costume Design), Philip S. Rosenberg (Lighting Design), Dan Moses Schreier (Sound Design), Aaron Rhyne (Projections Design), Brian Strumwasser (Make-Up Design), and Charles LaPointe (Wig Design). Orchestrations are by Jonathan Tunick and Vocal Arrangements are by Dianne Adams McDowell and Steven Lutvak. Paul Staroba serves as Music Director.

Gentleman's Guide opened at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre to overwhelming critical acclaim in November 2013 where The New York Times raved “GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE will LIFT THE HEARTS of all those who’ve been pining for what sometimes seems A LOST ART FORM. ” The Hollywood Reporter enthused Gentleman’s Guide “Restores our faith in musical comedy!” and Time Magazine said “Just as I was about to give up on musicals, along comes A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER!”

CALIFORNIA SHAKESPEARE THEATER ANNOUNCES 2016 SEASON

Line-Up Includes Much Ado About Nothing, Directed By Jackson Gay; Pulitzer-Prize Winning Fences, By August Wilson, Directed By Raelle Myrick-Hodges; And The Return Of Director Lisa Peterson With Shaw’s You Never Can Tell

– California Shakespeare Theater today announced plans for its 2016 season, which will feature one of Shakespeare’s sassiest romantic comedies, a Pulitzer Prize-winning story of one family’s struggle to achieve the American Dream, and an outrageously funny comedy of manners by George Bernard Shaw. The season, which was selected by outgoing Artistic Director Jonathan Moscone, will include one final Shakespearean title to be selected by incoming Artistic Director Eric Ting later this fall.

Opening the season at the Bruns will be Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Jackson Gay. Beatrice and Benedick are content that love has passed each of them by; their seeming incompatibility, coupled with the alleged infidelity and outright villainy of those around them, creates a deeply passionate tale of love for those who either don’t recognize it when it finds them or who take love for granted until it’s nearly gone. Ms. Gay, named by the New York Times as one of the “power players of off-Broadway” makes her Cal Shakes debut with this production, which plays May 25 through June 19.

Next up, Raelle Myrick-Hodges, former Artistic Director of Brava Center, also makes her Cal Shakes debut with Fences, by August Wilson, from July 6-31. Set in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Fences is the powerful, stunning story of Troy Maxson, former Negro League ballplayer turned sanitation worker, whose inability to come to terms with his fall from grace nearly destroys his family. Winner of the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Fences marks the first time August Wilson’s work has appeared on the Bruns stage.

Opening in August is George Bernard Shaw’s keenly witty take on marriage and the modern woman, You Never Can Tell, helmed by Lisa Peterson, whose previous Cal Shakes outings include King Lear (2007) and The Winter’s Tale (2002), among others. Feminist author and lecturer Mrs. Clandon and her adult children return to England where she is accidentally reunited with her husband, and the children meet their father for the first time. Sparks fly as old grudges clash with contemporary ideals in this brilliant comedy, playing at the Bruns from August 10-September 4.

Managing Director Susie Falk commented, “The 2016 season features an exciting mix of Cal Shakes debuts—including those of directors Jackson Gay and Raelle Myrick-Hodges, and playwright August Wilson—along with the return of director Lisa Peterson, and our return to the great wells of Shakespeare and Shaw. And of course we will have a new artistic director, Eric Ting, at the helm, who will be selecting the final title of our season.”

Season packages for the four-play season and group tickets for parties of 10 or more are available now; single tickets go on sale April 4, 2016. Prices start at $124 for a four-play subscription, with discounts available for seniors, youth, and full-time K-12 educators.

For information or to charge tickets by phone with VISA, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express, call the Cal Shakes Box Office at 510.548.9666. Additional information and online ticketing is available at www.calshakes.org.

BERKELEY REP’S THE GROUND FLOOR LAUNCHES BI-ANNUAL PLAYWRITING SALON FOR LOCAL PLAYWRIGHTS

Bay Area writers invited to learn more about the development of new work

Known for fostering playwrights at all stages of their careers, The Ground Floor: Berkeley Rep’s Center for the Creation and Development of New Work today announces that it will begin hosting bi-annual salons in the fall and spring to share information with local playwrights about the new play development process at Berkeley Rep

Madeleine Oldham, director of The Ground Floor and resident dramaturg, will present a short overview of The Ground Floor and then field questions from the group on everything from relationship building to commissioning to how seasons are selected. The Ground Floor invites aspiring and experienced writers for an evening of lively conversation.

The inaugural event will be held on Monday, October 5, 2015 at 7:30 PM at Berkeley Rep’s bar at 2025 Addison Street. The event is free, but space is limited. To register, visit http://bit.ly/1UEYBxy. A spring salon will be held in April 2016.

“We’re very excited to provide a more direct link between The Ground Floor and Bay Area writers,” says Oldham. “The Ground Floor Summer Residency Lab has a strong track record of local participation, and we want to make sure artists in our area are aware of that opportunity. We’re really looking forward to engaging in a dialogue with our immediate community about how The Ground Floor can best support local playwrights.”

The Ground Floor seeks to enhance and expand the processes by which Berkeley Rep makes theatre. This includes supporting commissioned artists and developing shows for the season, as well as The Ground Floor’s flagship program, the Summer Residency Lab. By inviting dynamic artists to work on new projects at any stage in the creative process, the Summer Residency Lab promotes vital cross-pollination among artists and champions the spirit of innovation inherent to Berkeley and the Bay Area. Since the Lab’s inaugural year in 2012, more than 300 artists working on 59 projects have participated. The 2015 Summer Residency Lab participants included local artists Anne Galjour, Peter Sinn Nachtrieb, Christopher Chen, and Annie Smart.

Three shows commissioned and developed through The Ground Floor have already appeared on Berkeley Rep’s main stage: KJ Sanchez and Jenny Mercein’s X’s and O’s (A Football Love Story) (2015), Marcus Gardley’s The House that will not Stand (2014), and Dan LeFranc’s Troublemaker, or The Freakin’ Kick-A Adventures of Bradley Boatright (2013). In February 2016, the Theatre presents a fourth: the world premiere of Julia Cho’s Aubergine, which was commissioned by Berkeley Rep and developed in The Ground Floor. Obie Award–winning director Liesl Tommy helms this bittersweet and moving meditation on family, forgiveness, and the things that nourish us.

ABOUT THE GROUND FLOOR: BERKELEY REP’S CENTER FOR THE CREATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW WORK
As the umbrella for all new play activity at Berkeley Rep, The Ground Floor is a bold initiative designed to raise the bar on the Tony Award–winning nonprofit’s already successful record of artistic innovation. Think of it as an incubator for theatrical start-ups or a top-notch R&D facility for artists. The Ground Floor is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts; Bank of America; the Kenneth Rainin Foundation; supporters of Berkeley Rep’s Create Campaign; and ArtPlace (artplaceamerica.org), a collaboration of top national foundations, the National Endowment for the Arts, and various federal agencies to accelerate creative place making across the U.S. For more information on each project, and for future announcements or opportunities to interact, visit: berkeleyrep.org/groundfloor.

2015 Daedalus Project Raises $115,772 Funds will be disbursed to HIV/AIDS organizations later this year

— The Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s 28th annual Daedalus Project fundraiser for HIV/AIDS organizations, held August 24, brought in $115,772. The event was produced by Claudia Alick, associate producer, community.

Tickets for the afternoon reading of Paula Vogel’s The Baltimore Waltz (directed by Eugene Ma and presented by special arrangement with Vogel and Dramatists Play Service) and the evening variety show (directed by Sara Bruner), along with general donations, raised approximately $60,000. Participants in the ever-popular underwear parade, which occurs during intermission of the variety show, raised $16,843 for the cause. Contributions also came from the Daedalus 5K Run; sales of T-shirts, lemonade, baked goods, concessions; a quilt raffle; an “Arts and Treasures” sale, and sales of Daedalus Pillows and Bears created by members of OSF’s Costume Department.

“It was another delightfully successful event,” said Executive Director Cynthia Rider. “We thank the company, community and audience members who contributed their time and money to making this event so memorable. We will disburse the funds to various organizations in the near future, and expect to be amazed again at how many lives these grants can affect in the fight against HIV/AIDS.”

Each year following the benefit, the Festival distributes the funds to various local, regional, national and international organizations involved in the battle against HIV/AIDS. Since the first Daedalus Project was organized by OSF actor and director James Edmondson in 1988, OSF will have distributed $1.6 million to HIV/AIDS organizations, including this year. In the last 28 years, the Daedalus Project has created a tradition of remembrance, celebration and collective action for OSF’s company, community and audience.

The 2016 Daedalus Project will be held on Monday, August 22. Tickets for Daedalus and all 2016 performances will go on sale to the general public December 2015.
