NCTC presents the regional premiere of Douglas Carter Beane’s The Nance Ambitious play set in the twilight of burlesque to feature return of acclaimed NCTC actor P.A. Cooley — This October, New Conservatory Theatre Center presents the return of Douglas Carter Beane’s sophisticated wit and thrilling theatrical ambition with the regional premiere of The Nance. After hit productions of Beane’s The Little Dog Laughed and As Bees in Honey Drown, NCTC bring his latest and “finest” (Time Out NY), what The New York Times calls “a heartfelt new play set in the twilight of burlesque.” This “bold, brave play” (Backstage) – which debuted at Lincoln Center Theater on Broadway in 2013 – recreates the naughty, raucous world of burlesque's heyday and tells the backstage story of headliner Chauncey Miles, who plays “the nance,” a flamboyantly effeminate stock character – usually played by a straight man. Set amid Mayor Fiorello La Guardia’s crackdown on burlesque before the 1939 World’s Fair, a time when it was easy to play gay yet dangerous to be gay, Chauncey's uproarious antics on the stage stand out in marked contrast to his offstage life. The Nance marks the return of P.A. Cooley, who will star as Chauncey. Cooley starred in several acclaimed productions with NCTC, including a celebrated star turn in Terrence McNally’s Love! Valour! Compassion!, Theater District by Richard Kramer, and the west coast premiere of McNally’s Some Men. Frequent NCTC collaborator Dennis Lickteig directs, with musical direction by Scrumbly Koldewyn, and choreography by Rory Davis. The Nance runs October 2- November 1, 2015. Opening Night is Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 8pm. Tickets are $25–45 and available at nctcsf.org or by calling (415) 861-8972.

Cutting Ball Theater opens its 17th season with LIFE IS A DREAM by Pedro Calderón de la Barca. First published in 1635, LIFE IS A DREAM is a philosophical allegory regarding the human situation and the mystery of life. Often described as the supreme example of Spanish Golden Age drama, it tells the story of Segismundo, a Prince of Poland, who has been imprisoned in a tower by his father following a prophecy that the prince would bring disaster to the country and death to the King. When the prince is briefly freed and goes on a rampage, he is put back in jail, and persuaded that his momentary freedom was all a dream. Wrestling with free will and fate, LIFE IS A DREAM remains one of Calderón’s best-known and most studied works. Following the sold-out success of Antigone, Acting Artistic Director Paige Rogers helms this Calderón classic, in a new translation from resident playwright Andrew Saito commissioned by Cutting Ball. “CURRAN: UNDER CONSTRUCTION” CONTINUES WITH GEOFF SOBELLE’S “THE OBJECT LESSON” SIX PERFORMANCE ENGAGEMENT AT THE CURRAN BEGINS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14– The Curran is proud to present Geoff Sobelle’s The Object Lesson as part of “Curran: Under Construction,” the ground-breaking series of intimate and non-traditional programming curated by Carole Shorenstein Hays. The six-performance limited engagement runs through October 18 at the Curran (445 Geary St). As recently announced, “Curran: Under Construction” kicks-off a new era for the historic theatre, which is undergoing a major renovation and will reopen as a full-sized venue in early 2017. Throughout “Curran: Under Construction,” audiences will enter through the Curran’s stage door alleyway and be seated on stage alongside the action. The Object Lesson is an environmental performance piece created by theater artist and Stanford graduate Geoff Sobelle. With boxes stacked to the ceiling of the space, Sobelle transforms the theater into an epic storage facility of gargantuan proportion. The audience is invited - in fact, encouraged - to roam through the installation before the show begins, and peek into the boxes. The shown unpacks our relationship to everyday objects: breaking, buying, finding, fixing, trading, selling, stealing, storing, and becoming buried under a world of things. Hilarious and heartbreaking, The Object Lesson is a meditation on the stuff we cling to and the crap we leave behind. “Tickets for “Curran: Under Construction” offerings are priced from $25 to $50 and can be purchased by exclusively via Eventbrite by visiting SFCURRAN.COM, where you can also find all the latest information about “Curran: Under Construction” IT CLOSES OCTOBER 18TH
