Pressure tactic

This purpose of this site, it appears, is to convince the various theatre unions to make a deal. The site will say "look at all this money people are willing to spend--isn't it worth cutting into potential ticket sales to get a piece of that?"

This is not a new tactic.

Priceline.com launched many years ago with the pretense that if you "named your price" for a flight, they might be able to get it for you. It was a fiction: the real purpose was to gather data about what people were willing to pay, and to present the result to the airlines as a report showing a huge amount of unmet demand, convincing them to cut deals with Priceline. It worked.
