Last week, ended Sunday, October 25, Broadway grosses totaled $27,391,971 for 34 shows.
In the prior week, ended October 18, 31 shows grossed $25,252,463.
In the comparable week last year, grosses for 32 shows totaled $25,858,526.
Other than Hamilton (of course) and On Your Feet (still in previews), the new shows so far this fall have not been grossing very well.
But last week, two new shows started previews with powerful box office results:
— China Doll at the Schoenfeld Theatre: David Mamet’s new play starring Al Pacino grossed $1,072,111 for its first 6 previews. That’s 112% of its potential (premium seat sales) at an average ticket price of $166.37.
— Misery at the Broadhurst Theatre: Stephen King’s classic adapted by William Goldman for the stage, and starring Bruce Willis (along with Laurie Metcalf), grossed $622,939 for its first 4 previews. That’s 104% of potential at an average ticket price of $134.63.
Amazing Grace closed on Sunday (Oct 25) at the Nederlander Theatre after a failed run of 24 previews and 116 performances. The musical cost $16 million to produce, all of which was lost. Additional losses likely occurred on a weekly basis most weeks (if not all) since the show did not break even with its typical grosses in only the high $200K to mid $300K range. Cumulative grosses: $5,540,127. That's under 29% of potential at an average ticket price of under $60 throughout the run.
