Tonight-Broadway Close Up: William Finn

Posted by: Ballerina56 12:09 am EDT 10/27/15

At Merkin Concert Hall.

Such an entertaining evening of Finn’s songs performed by Alysha Umphress, Taylor Trensch, Betty Buckley, Stephen DeRosa, Norm Lewis, and several others. Finn is quite the character and his interview segments between the numbers, with host Sean Hartley, were truly priceless.

Songs from A NEW BRAIN, FALSETTOS, SPELLING BEE and ELEGIES were all represented in the 2-½ hour show. Finn talked about his new show, THE ROYAL FAMILY, and got up to sing STUPID THINGS, paying homage (and a terrific send-up) to Elaine Stritch as she had performed it. He was terrific! If the rest of the songs from the show are that good, I can’t wait to see it.

Did Stephen DeRosa sing "The Baseball Game"?

You didn't mention Sally Wilfert, who was the stand-out for me last night. Her singing and acting were terrific, but what really impressed me was how clear her voice sounded, making every lyric understandable up in the balcony despite a mediocre sound system.

Loved Sally, too.

Also agree with you about the mediocre—sub-mediocre is a better term— sound system at Merkin Concert Hall.

An entertaining evening indeed. Finn spoke about how pleased he was with the City Center production of "A New Brain" since he felt he finally got it right. I hope that somewhere there's a recording of Stritch singing "Stupid Things."
