re: the "book" is more than just the words the actors say

In reply to: Question Hamilton in Tony Awards: best score and book - Kaoru 05:13 pm EDT 10/28/15

The book-writer of a musical isn't only responsible for the dialogue within the scenes, it is also their job to completely structure the show. They have to decide things like:

Which characters to include; who are they and what are they like? The overall plot of the show; what happens? When does it happen within the show? In the case of Hamilton: which historical events and details should be included or not?

So to answer your question: yes, they will be judging the book based on how well the story is constructed and developed, which is the job of a book-writer. I don't see it as different from Les Mis at all, in that regard. All sung-through shows are judged in the "Best Book" category the same way.

As for Leslie Odom Jr, nobody is quite sure yet, but many people think he will be placed in the leading category along with Miranda. I agree that he should be put in leading (and I hope he wins).

It'll be interesting to see if ''Hamilton'' submits Odom for Leading Actor or Featured Actor. And then it'll be up to the Tony eligibility committee to agree, or use their discretion to place him where they believe he belongs.

The Lucille Lortel Awards nominated Odom for Leading Actor (and he lost to co-star Lin-Manuel Miranda). The Drama Desk Awards nominated him for Featured Actor (and he lost to Christian Borle in ''Something Rotten'').

To me, it's a co-starring role, so he oughta be up for Leading. Odom's amazing. As for winning, there are so many musicals yet to open.

Miranda is already going to be taking home three Tony awards, I think the voters might be inclined to give somebody else some love in the Acting category, so unless someone else puts in a star making performance this season, I'd say Odom's going into Leading.

Book, Score ... what's the third award for Miranda if not Lead Actor?

I think the OP means Best Musical.

According to ibdb.com. So he wouldn't qualify for best musical Tony. Only author of best play gets a Tony.

There used to be a separate category for author of play and best play, which makes sense to me. There are times that a production of a play overcomes the weakness of the writing, but I think most years both Tony's were awarded to the same play so they eliminated it.

It could well be Danny Burstein's sixth nomination without a win. Might we have another Kelli O'Hara moment?

Plus we have yet to see Benjamin Walker in "American Psycho" and who knows what else.

The season is very young.
