This gal needs to go back and hit the vocal technique books. Saw her at the Met last night in TANNHAUSER and she's developed a wildly flapping vibrato: her dauntingly LOUD voice (louder than anyone onstage or anything in the pit) only makes it worse, and she seems to have no great ability to sing softly. The men were all superb, especially Peter Mattei, possessor of one of the most liquidly beautiful baritones I've ever heard. The young Chinese soprano Ying Fang was another standout in her brief but important role as the Shepherd -- a high soprano with an unusually warm and round timbre -- I expect we'll be hearing much more from her. Over and above all was the wonderful conducting of Jimmy Levine, who received a much-deserved outpouring of appreciation and love from the Met audience. I have a great fondness for this unabashedly traditional production, which Gelb will undoubtedly soon trash and replace with some fashionable Genius Director's techno-nightmare concept.
