Back by popular demand for a strictly limited engagement, the FolksbieneRU and Lost & Found Project are proud to announce to return of the family musical The King of Chelm this November. The King of Chelm is written by Boris Zilberman and directed by the acclaimed Israeli actor/director Gera Sandler. The production features original score by composer Dmitri “Zisl” Slepovitch, with arrangement by Alex Ryaboy. Stage and multimedia design by L2CoLAB. The King of Chelm will run from November 14 – 29, 2015 at the Kraine Theatre (85 East 4th Street, NYC). The King of Chelm tells a story of a boy who dreams about becoming a super-hero. One day he wakes to find himself in a magical world where he learns what it is to be brave. In the upside-down and backwards universe of this small shtetl, Aaron together with the fools and the wise men of Chelm is going on a journey to find out what it really means to be a hero. The King of Chelm is an interactive performance for audiences ages 4-12. There is an interactive workshops following each show.

Cast includes Tirosh Schneider (NY: Austin's Dog Bread), Elena Levenson (Iphigenia and Other Daughters), Larissa Copetti (Alone in the US), Boris Zilberman (TV “Mysteries at the Monument”), Clemmie Evans (NY: The New Morality), Sergey Nagorny (TV: “The Americans”), Jonathan Smith (Film: Mooz-Lum). Creative team includes: Set & costume design by Luba Proger, Leonid Khanin of L2coLAB.

The King of Chelm is presented by FolksbieneRU: a partnership initiative of National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene and Genesis Philanthropy Group and the generous support of Natan Fund.

FolksbieneRU is the Russian Division of The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene. This unique performing arts platform was created to explore the rich heritage and complex identities of the Russian-speaking Jewish community. Using theatre and instruments of the performing arts to boldly venture into the matters of the heart, FolksbieneRU programs help participants find their own creative expression, connect with earlier generations, and deepen their Jewish identity. A special emphasis is placed on stewarding younger generations into Jewish life by bringing teaching artists to camps, schools and community organizations.

Company in Residence - The Lost & Found Project is an experimental theatrical troupe, founded by Anna Zicer and a group of young Russian-Jewish actors in NYC. Through the use of verbatim technique in its original productions, Lost & Found cast unabashedly reaches into the depth of the Russian-Jewish American experience to vocalize the struggles and celebrate the successes, and ultimately help its audience connect with the communal sense of pride and belonging.

Since 1915, the award-winning National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene [NYTF] has presented a window into the world of Jewish culture by engaging, educating, and igniting the imaginations of generations of theatergoers. It is the longest consecutively-producing Yiddish theatre company in the world and America's sole-surviving professional Yiddish theatre. NYTF presents plays, musicals, concerts, and workshops in English, Yiddish, Ladino, Hebrew and Russian, with English and Russian supertitles accompanying most performances. Its mission is to celebrate the Jewish experience through the performing arts and to transmit a rich cultural legacy in exciting new way.

Who’s Who:

BORIS ZILBERMAN (Playwright) A founding member of Lost&Found Project, he performed in both prior L&F productions, Doroga (2012 Gene Frankel Theater NYC) and COVERS (2013). He is also the co-writer of COVERS (Best Production, Art Okraina Festival 2013), and adapted and wrote original material for KNOCK (Off-Broadway Players Theater 2014). TV Credits include Perfect Murder (Investigation Discovery), and Monumental Mysteries (Travel Channel). As a comedian, he appeared in the finals of the national Laughing Skull Comedy Festival (2013), and has studied and performed improv (UCB, PIT, Magnet) since 2008. Other credits include Holografx, an award-winning 3D holographic board game, and Birthright: Monologues, a personal spoken-word/hip-hop reflection on Jewish identity. His favorite thing in the world is getting on a plane to go perform somewhere, and he hopes to do it forever. GERA SANDLER (Director) is an actor, stage director, and TV and Radio personality. After emigrating from Moscow to Israel in 1990, Gera graduated from the School of Performing Arts “Beit Zvi” in 1997, receiving six prestigious awards. Sandler played in the Gesher Theatre in “Don Juan” by Moliere, as well as the Theatre of Young Spectators in “The Last Devil” by Bashevis Zinger. For the past twelve years Sandler has been one of the leading actors in the Yiddish Theatre in Israel. His prominent roles include Nathan Rothschild in American musical “The Rothschilds,” Hershl in “Simple Story” and Yasha Mazor in “The Magician of Lublin”. As a stage director he directed 7 productions, among them 4 operas including Don Pasquale by Donizzeti in Jerusalem Chamber Opera. Sandler also hosted three personal TV shows on Israel’s Channel 9. Sandler’s film credits include “Jellyfish” (winner of three awards at Cannes Film Festival, including the “Golden Camera” award), “Stones”, “Dance Mom” (winner of first prize at the all-Israeli short film competition “Volgin”), “Children of the USSR” and over thirty other movies and series in Israel. Sandler is also a famous Israeli voice-over actor and director, he is famous for the voice of Bloo in “Foster House Imaginary Friends” series for Russian Disney Cartoon Channel and for his voice of Dracula in the Hebrew version of Adam Sandler’s cartoon “Hotel Transylvania”. He recently worked with Natalie Portman's latest film based on a novel by Amos O'z.
