I may have enjoyed the cast recording with Bostwick and Coullet as much or more than the actual show as a teenager. Isn't it more than a little sexist, though? "I Steal With Style" is about taking sexual favors, right?

Haven't seen it since then, or actually listened to it in many years. Hope I'm proven wrong.

The fact that the source material is by a woman may protect it against criticism, or that may be what they hope.

If it works out that way, perhaps it will be time for a Prettybelle revival.

it's not very often that I get to correct AlanScott

but I'm sure as Alan knows, PRETTYBELLE is one of the more infamous shows to close in Boston before ever landing on the GREAT WHITE WAY

So, if "Prettybelle"
was ever to resurface it would be eligible for best new musical , almost as likely as THE PINK JUNGLE becoming eligible for BEST PLAY

I'm not sure what you're correcting. The use of revival? I know I was speaking a bit freely, but it's been produced. So a new production would be a revival. Not a New York revival, but a revival.

And, let's face it, a production of Prettybelle would be like reviving something from the dead.

Fun score. Some lovely music. Crazy fuckin' script, but interesting.

Also, about as un-politically correct as possible, though she does try to avenge a wrong in her own way.

Interesting: 'Prettybelle' was playing at the Shubert in Boston while FOLLIES was at the Colonial in 1971

Wonder if Miss Lansbury was ever considered for FOLLIES ?

This was done in San Diego in the early 80s with Brian [not yet Stokes] Mitchell in the lead. The show got protested and picketed by local feminist groups as being, as you put it, "rapey". (What a word.) The women in the show thought nothing of it, and audiences thoroughly enjoyed it. Take that as you may.

"'Rapey.' (What a word.)"

I agree, it's a weird word that seems to trivialize the subject. Isn't this the word Gina Gershon used in explaining why the Shriners' ballet was cut from the horrendous BYE BYE BIRDIE revival?

I had this same discussion with a (male) scholar a summer ago, with regard to the Welty novella. I maintain that the language is metaphoric--"and he robbed her of what he had left the day before." It is a seduction, with Rosamond a willing participant--Welty (and Uhry as adaptor) uses the "rob" verb to maintain the fairy tale role of Jamie Lockhart. I would understand a reading of it as "rape," but it is presented as neither violent nor painful nor traumatic and would appear to be mutually pleasure.

And I can be very sensitive to "rapey" and "violence against women" in these classic texts--I still have a hard time with "Carousel" (probably my favorite musical), because it's hard not to see it as having Julie excuse Billy's violence--other than she doesn't "feel pain," because she knows how frustrated and upset he is at his inability to support them and be a good husband. Well, yes, but still... So I have to simply grit my teeth and live with the inconsistency--and that may also be the case "The Robber Bridegroom," which has been one of my favorite small musicals since I saw a production directed by a graduate student when I was at Northwestern decades ago.

Other than it sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom and the extra tracks are all at the end instead of where they come in the show, no.

Quirky, original, and brilliant – far more of each then most of today's musicals.

But couldn't tell you where. Looking at my blurb ratings of shows I keep. I gave it a "c" and stated forgettable.

With that said, I do applaudroundabout in reviving oddball shows instead of standard revivals. I saw the drag movie hush hush sweet Charlotte last night at Castro theater and someone performed im alive from applause. I thought, why doesn't roundabout do that instead of she loves me or lct King and I.

Because She Loves Me and The King and I are good shows, and Applause isn't, I'd assume.

(The song is called "But Alive," FYI.)

Actually it's much better than that. Its based on a Eudora Welty novelette and has some sassy Southern charm. Needs a strong leading man, Barry Bostwick won the Tony for the role and I'm sure Steven Pasquale will deliver the goods. I think it even got nominated for Best Musical in a not overly strong season, but I don't have time to research it right now. I give the show a B or B+ in a good production. I for one would love to see this production.

''Bridegroom'' revisited

Posted by: WaymanWong 08:36 pm EDT 10/29/15
In reply to: re: ive seen it - Snowysdad 06:05 pm EDT 10/29/15

''The Robber Bridegroom'' has an unusual Tony history. It opened in October 1975 at the Harkness, starring Kevin Kline and Patti LuPone, and closed after 14 performances. And yet it got 2 Tony nods: Book (Uhry) and Featured Actress (LuPone).

It was then revived in October 1976 at the Biltmore, starring Barry Bostwick and Rhonda Coullet. And it ran for 145 performances. It received only 1 Tony nomination: Leading Actor (Bostwick). Though the show closed 4 months before the Tonys, he won. (Yes, others have won a Tony for a show's that closed, but rarely when it's the ONLY nomination.)

I can't think of another new Broadway musical that opened in one season ... and then was revived only a year later (and got at least one Tony nomination in each season). Maybe someone else here remembers what the circumstances were.

It wasn't Tony-nominated for Best Musical, but the Drama Desk nominated it for Best Musical in 1975 AND 1976, losing both times.

The circumstances were that it was produced by the Acting Company. The group played a limited engagement rep season at the Harkness, after which it was back to already scheduled touring.

The reviews were good enough that it came back. John Houseman, the Acting Company's artistic director, and Margot Harley, the group's producing director, were actively involved with the commercial remounting. The commercial Broadway production recreated the Acting Company production — same production team — with a completely different cast. It played a tryout of sorts at the Mark Taper Forum before coming to the Biltmore.

The Acting Company's production played at the Harkness during a musicians' strike. Because the Harkness was operating under a special contract with the union, it was the only Broadway musical performing at the time.

I don't know if it's bad, but it's not a good sign for a revival.

Kevin Kline & Patti LuPone made a splash in the original production with The Acting Company in 1975.

Someone having not heard of the show. That was the complete text of the message I was replying to, so I thought that was relatively clear.

That said, it's at the Pels, so it'll be much less of an issue than if they were trying to mount a revival at the American Airlines or Studio 54.

I've heard only the pretty ''Sleepy Man,'' which Patti LuPone sang. (It's also on Liz Callaway's ''The Story Goes On'' CD.)
