It seems like it's been a long time since he's had a new play that hasn't been a disaster.

His new plays may not be getting critical acclaim, but they make money. His new plays over the past decade are November (recouped), Race(recouped), The Anarchist (did not recoup), and China Doll, which may well recoup regardless of its critical merit. During that time, he's had several revivals, with Glengarry Glen Ross and Speed-the-Plow making money.

From an investor point of view, he's a pretty good investment.

It seems the casting makes money. And, luckily, Mamet plays still get name casting. (But do they read the plays first?)

It's a not-uncommon example of a once great playwright continuing to get high-profile opportunities and continuing to attract major stars based on the stellar reputation he deservedly established through his early work, even though many people feel the quality of the plays he has written over the past two decades has been generally quite poor. (I seem to recall some good reviews for RACE, but I really didn't like that one, either.)

I'm not including CHINA DOLL in my assessment, because I have not yet seen or read it. At least he's not directing this one....
