In recent months,I've been through this same experience three times--audiences loving musicals that the critics, and even many here, didn't--and, yes, it's very sad that the economics dictate early closings. For the record, the three--and all wonderful productions--were THE LAST SHIP, THE VISIT and AMAZING GRACE.

I admired "Last Ship" and "The Visit," the scores of both shows are keepers. And they were new, they had a great shot. I don't quite think this "Dames," a mini-show moved into a B'way house, reflects the same risk. I could be wrong. To me, this show had little chance of attracting a wide audience, its premise and homage/parody elements very tied to another era. I couldn't figure out the target demo. It has nothing to do with the quality here. It's just a (small) piece of musical theater that seemed an odd idea for such affectionate -- and expensive -- revisiting. I don't think it would sell even off-B'way.

Not the best examples, since two out of the three ran longer than financial sense dictated.

But that makes sense. Critics (and theatre junkies) see everything; but most other people go to shows they think they will like. So it's not much of a stretch when they do like it.

If they don't exist in large enough numbers, the shows close.
