I'm suggesting I wouldn't believe anything I read in the Daily Mail. And I do mean *anything*.

Or to put it another way, it is certainly not unheard-of for that publication to edit quotes so that they look like they mean something quite different from what the speaker actually intended. If the interview had appeared in, say, the arts section of the Guardian, I'd be far more inclined to take it at face value. The Mail, even when it looks like it's publishing a direct quote, is not a reliable source.
