Actors and lines learned

There should be no shame if compelling actors/personailities can shine brilliantly but need teleprompters or little ear-pieces to remember lines. Line-learning ability tends to drift as you pass 60. So what? It was thrilling to watch Stritch in the first preview of NIGHT MUSIC, even though I wished she'd allowed herself to use some sort of prompter. Brando started using an ear-piece in his career. Why not? It's not all about learning lines.

At the play tonight and saw Mamet talking to a tall woman who I surmise must be the director. Went over to verify and he couldn't have been more polite.
Told my friend and I that they were still working on the play.
It's interesting and held our attention, but does need tightening. Some very good political one-liners, more humor than I expected. Pacino is an exciting presence and Christopher Denham as his manipulative protege is quite good.

Here's the deal: This play is not very good, Mamet was gone for a bit. He should have been there to help Pacino through it especially when the director is just a lame duck and collecting her paycheck. This is what happens when you get over-inflated Hollywood stars whose performances ride on SELF-PARODY. He is a draw to a very small number of people these days: the bridge & tunnel crowd who want to see the GODFATHER in action, for one. The rest, those mesmerized by his celebrity and performances of days gone by. There are so many other plays waiting in the wings with actors who don't need tele-prompters or things like that. Bring those plays to production and SCRAP this mediocre play that's simply a money machine. The carnival barker producers can't rely on Pacino to be the guy he was on the boards 25 years ago (and yes I KNOW he loves the theatre, but quite frankly, who cares). But they CAN rely on you to fork over $100 to see this garbage.

Nothing else to see here...move on.

I'm confused by what seems a contradiction. How can it be a money machine (and clearly it is--so far, at least) if, as you say, Pacino is a draw to a very small number of people these days? What does that mean?

Many producers of limits runs would be thrilled to have the grosses "China Doll" has experienced so far. I think you are misrepsentng Paicino's draw.

Hoping it comes up on TDF...so sad its standing room tickets are almost double the price of the ones for their GLENGARRY in 2012. It's early in previews...Pacino is so alive no matter what. His struggle as he felt his way through the at least early part of the run of GG mirrored his character's in many ways, so was very moving.

Don't want to dash anyone's hopes but did GLENGARRY ever appear on TDF? I would be very surprised if this very limited run ever puts tickets on TDF, except maybe maybe for an odd holiday date.

considering "the press" reports that Mamet has retreated to Hollywood.

I thought it was going to be that they'd closed the play in previews. But I suppose that would never happen as long as ticket sales are hot--which they are.

One more time: don't believe ANYTHING you read in the Daily Mail, including the date, until you get it corroborated by a more reliable source.

You know, like Fox News.

"It's been corroborated."

In a reliable print source, with quotes attributed to named individuals rather than "sources close to the production"?

Pacino is a force to be reckoned with...according to the publicity folks, read his bio from the link. He's a shadow of his former self...

Come see the show & you'll take that article more seriously.

I'm shocked.

As a playwright, Mamet "left the building"...

...about 15-20 years ago. His recent plays have ranged from mediocre to excruciating. It's difficult to imagine how this one might amount to much more. Such a sad fall.

Why so sad? I don't think he cares...otherwise the product would be good.

Self-parody and collecting checks...that's the name of the game.

Did this script have any development?

In reply to: As a playwright, Mamet "left the building"... - bwaywatcher 09:51 pm EDT 10/30/15

That's the pertinent question. The last couple have arrived on B'way seemingly with only a few table reads, no traditional shake-down with a company and director and even a workshop-like climate with invited audiences. It's a question here, but a valid one. Plays are shaped, built, honed, reshaped rather than emerge intact from the computer. It's strange to imagine any play arriving in a full production with a star and first tier director attached without prior development.
