Revisit to CURIOUS INCIDENT

Posted by: mamaleh 10:28 pm EDT 10/31/15

I saw Alex Sharp in CURIOUS INCIDENT shortly after it opened last October. Today, I revisited the play and saw Benjamin Wheelwright, the new alternate, as Christopher. He was just as effective and intense as Sharp; in fact, I enjoyed the show more today than I did last year. Why? Wheelwright's Christopher somehow came across as less grating, more sympathetic, appealing and likable. But I also began to wonder--is that how we should view Christopher? Is he supposed to be likable? If he is, does that somehow counteract the intentions of the playwright and director? I wonder.

Christopher shouldn't be hard to like--but he shouldn't be too easy to like, either. Ideally, I think there should be a barrier of "otherness" there initially, between the character and the audience, that's gradually bridged by the actor's performance and the audience's growing familiarity and comfort with the character.

I found Christopher both endearing and annoying. Which was fine with me. Alex Sharp and Taylor Trensch were both excellent in the role. If I can go back cheaply I may see how the play holds up.

I don't remember people calling Alex Sharp grating. Likability is why it's been a popular play.

Perhaps it was his voice or manner that came off as relatively more abrasive --in my perception, anyway -- than that of a current player. Still, I rooted for Sharp and was glad he won the Tony last season.

I saw the play for the first time yesterday with Lea (?) playing the role. He was wonderful.

I thought the play itself dragged in the first half (plus I was really tired) but picked up in the second. I got more emotionally involved in the second half and found myself actually crying at the end
