Our local community theater is doing their first big musical this spring. They've chosen OLIVER! primarily due to its appeal, the fact that is has not been done in the area, it can be done on a one unit set and the director is incredibly familiar with the property, having been in 7 productions. The venue rental (including light and soundboard operator at $20 an hour) comes in around $3,000. Our Music Director is $1500. Five musicians in our orchestra at $65 per event with six events (three rehearsals and three shows) comes to around $1900. The rights to the show are $3,000. We figure we need about $10,000 just to start off. We have been looking for corporate sponsors and some grants for support. I will say that I think Disney's BATB is a lot more expensive than OLIVER! just in terms of costumes and set (BATB is a very set-heavy show). But I would say figure on starting out with a minimum of $10,000.
