| I am looking for a small to medium sized musical that has a leading female role that requires a Norwegian or even Eastern European accent. Thanks in advance! | |

| How about a stripped-down, all-female version of Fiddler? :-) | |

| Wouldn't it be easier to have the actress learn an accent then it would to have the rest of the cast learn a Norwegian one? | |

| SILK STOCKINGS - The three comissars are cartoon Russians, but the more real and foreign-sounding Ninotchka is, the better. And the role was originally played by a German (Hildegard Knef aka Neff) with an otherwise all-American cast. BED AND SOFA - One of my favorite small-scale musicals. The three characters are all Russians, but there's no reason they couldn't be from different regions so that the woman had a different accent from the two men. PROMENADE (I know, I'm always trying to get people to do PROMENADE) - but two of the major female roles, the Maid and the Mother, could be from anywhere & are outsiders to all the rest. And the show takes place in a surreal never-never land where the people could be from anywhere. ROBERTA - not sure how much of the original book is left in current rental materials, but I never read anything about the original production that suggested audiences viewed Lyda Roberti's extremely Eastern European accent as out of place. And you can't beat Jerome Kern. Unless, of course, you're Irving Berlin. So what about LOUISIANA PURCHASE? Irene Bordoni only had the faintest hint of a foreign accent left by that time, but it still added charm to a delicious score. | |

| How about PLEASURES AND PALACES, in honor of Bob Fosse's Norwegian heritage ? It closed out of town in Detroit never making it to Boston before Broadway. | |

| Does anyone ever do ''Song of Norway,'' that 1944 Wright-Forrest operetta about Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg? There's a 1970 film version, starring Toralv Maurstad and Florence Henderson (that apparently hoped to be the next ''Sound of Music''). | |

| I've never seen the film version, which is said to be a fiasco. I saw a stage version when I was a boy (about 1958) and thought it was a lot of fun--though I wasn't very experienced with musicals at that time. But it isn't exactly the small show the OP is looking for--it's a huge operetta. | |

| "I Remember Mama" - Norwegians in Minnesota "Milk and Honey" (Molly Picon role has NY-Yiddish inflections) "Tovarich" (Eva Gabor with her Hungarian accent replaced Vivien Leigh) - it's about former Russian royalty after the Revolution being servants in Paris | |

| "She Loves Me" one of the great musicals, of course is presumed to take place in Eastern Europe - I believe Budapest, though Hungarian accents aren't usually used. But you have the choice roles of Amalia and Ilona available for your intended leading lady. | |

| There's also "A Doll's Life" the musical based on Ibsen's "A Doll's House", but I was disappointed when I saw it. It did have a fairly large staging, so I don't think it's quite small or medium-sized, nor is it particularly very good. It does feature a Norwegian leading role. | |

| There's no reason that the Reverend Mother in NUNSENSE couldn't have a European accent. As long as she can sort of carry a tune. | |
