My Week of Theatre Going in London Possible Spoilers

Posted by: liam44 05:13 pm EST 11/01/15

I made this trip over to see Gypsy again having seen it in the early Spring. Imelda Staunton is giving the greatest performance of Madame Rose that I have ever seen and I have seen them all including Ethel Merman. I saw it twice, on Saturday afternoon and again on Monday Eve. and her performance is very consistent and raw and packs such an emotional wallop both in Everything's Coming Up Roses and Rose's Turn.
I also Mark Rylance in Farinelli And The King, I was very moved by the play and Mark's terrific performance. It is performed very much in the style of his 12th night in terms of costumes and music and candle light.
Also caught The Father, (which MTC is doing next year with Frank Langella in a different production) a very interesting play about aging. I am 71 and along with the rest of this middle age to older audience, I really appreciated the amount of courage it takes to sit through this play. You are witnessing on stage, in a brilliant production what might possibly happen to yourself at the end of your life and it is not pretty picture although the setoff this production is really beautiful. Also saw Husbands and Sons at the National a wonderful production. I think Mothers and Wives would have been a much more accurate title. Jane Eyre at the National I would skip, I got exhausted watching the actors run around the unit set and climbing ladders for 3 hours and 20.
Also saw Teddy Ferrara at the Donmar which I really disliked to say the least. I would skip it unless you pick up a 10 pound day seat and do not seat upstairs or on the sides.

I am going over at the end of the month.
Seeing Funny Girl at the Menier and I was thinking about Gypsy, but after seeing SO many Rose's I was ambivalent. But, your review is pushing me to go. Also looking at the new play with Kim Cattrall at the Royal Court.

I was going to see Teddy Ferrara because I have Thursday matinee open (and I saw Miss Saigon last Thanksgiving matinee). Is there anything else that plays Thursday matinee you would recommend?

I'm in total agreement about "Gypsy." Never saw Merman, but I believe Staunton's Mamma Rose is the new standard.
