SILK STOCKINGS - The three comissars are cartoon Russians, but the more real and foreign-sounding Ninotchka is, the better. And the role was originally played by a German (Hildegard Knef aka Neff) with an otherwise all-American cast.

BED AND SOFA - One of my favorite small-scale musicals. The three characters are all Russians, but there's no reason they couldn't be from different regions so that the woman had a different accent from the two men.

PROMENADE (I know, I'm always trying to get people to do PROMENADE) - but two of the major female roles, the Maid and the Mother, could be from anywhere & are outsiders to all the rest. And the show takes place in a surreal never-never land where the people could be from anywhere.

ROBERTA - not sure how much of the original book is left in current rental materials, but I never read anything about the original production that suggested audiences viewed Lyda Roberti's extremely Eastern European accent as out of place. And you can't beat Jerome Kern.

Unless, of course, you're Irving Berlin. So what about LOUISIANA PURCHASE? Irene Bordoni only had the faintest hint of a foreign accent left by that time, but it still added charm to a delicious score.

How about PLEASURES AND PALACES, in honor of Bob Fosse's Norwegian heritage ? It closed out of town in Detroit never making it to Boston before Broadway.
