The subplot is necessary, though, for two reasons: it really hammers home that the law in question could protect Charles and his family (which, incidentally, is why Diana's presence is necessary as well), and it makes Harry's choice at the end possible, which underlines how loyalty to the institution of the monarchy takes precedence over personal needs or convictions for the royals -- even the misfit ones.
