the event that triggers the crisis between King & Parliament might have seemed more real, and understandable, if we had seen the process of Prime Minister asking for approval of a few bills, before the crisis began

I don't think the problem is an unfamiliarity with parliamentary protocol. The play is unclear as to why Charles makes choice after choice to sacrifice his crown. Is that sacrifice noble, absurd or a bit of both? If it's a bit of both then is Charles granted a deeper understanding of the consequences of his choices at the end? Kind of but not really.

The play isn't hagiography but it also pulls its punches when it comes to the current royal line; that's a Shakespearean reference I could have done without.
