Broadway Grosses 11/1 —Mets, goblins & runners cut into ticket sales (but not Pacino)

Posted by: jesse21 03:40 pm EST 11/02/15

-

  • Last week, ended Sunday, November 1, Broadway grosses totaled $22,819,831 for 33 shows.

In the prior week, ended October 25, Broadway grosses totaled $27,391,971 for 34 shows.

In the comparable week last year, grosses for 34 shows totaled $23,464,674.

  • New York Mets in the World Series at home at Citi Field, Halloween Parade, trick-or-treat, and the New York City Marathon all distracted attention to dampen grosses last week. 22 of 33 shows saw six-figure drops from the prior week. [See chart linked below for details.]

  • China Doll may be having artistic problems, but not at the box office. Last week, for 7 previews, the Al Pacino/David Mamet vehicle grossed $1,215,881 at 110.6% of potential gross (reflecting premium tickets). The average ticket price was the highest on Broadway at $163.80 which beat out Hamilton ($157.70). Standing room was sold for a 100.5% occupancy rate. That SR costs $67, incidentally.

  • On the other hand, Misery, starring Bruce Willis and Laurie Metcalf, is doing well, but not holding up quite as well as its first 4 previews in the prior week suggested it might. Last week, the gross was $906,961 for a full week of 8 previews. That’s 75.7% of gross potential at a healthy $117.06 average ticket. 82% of the seats were occupied (paid and comp) at the Broadhurst.

Huh? People travelled to NYC from all over the world for the marathon and were encouraged by NYRR to go see a show while they were here. My parents came to see me run the marathon and went to two shows while they were here. I don't think the marathon did any harm to Broadway at all. Halloween and WS makes sense.

Allegiance only down $4k, good news or bad news?

It looks like Allegiance had the smallest drop of all the shows that did drop. I'd be curious to know if people here think that's because it doesn't have further it can fall or if it is starting to pick up steam which allowed it to weather the perfect storm this past week.

If you take into account performance numbers each week. i think the fans of takei and solanga helped the grosses the first two weeks and now that is done, it is slipping. I think the reviews will be respectful, but not ticket selling raves.

Just noticed that they only did 7 shows last week so the $4k drop makes more sense.

    $149k for dames at sea

That does look like it will close by January.

The drop for some shows in the quarter million range is pretty surprising.

Halloween on Saturday is the worst case scenario and when combined with the World Series creates a perfect storm.

I don't see how Dames makes it to the holidays.

How in the world did "On The Town" run for almost a FULL year when you (& others) had it continuously closing WEEKL to WEEK?
    Miracles do happen, I guess!

You are a little confused (at least as it relates to me): I never "had it closing" because I understood that the producers were lunatics. What I said over and over was that it (like various other terribly produced shows with deep pockets) SHOULD close and WOULD close only when the landlord kicked them to the curb. The difference for Dames is that I don't think they have pockets that deep.

The last On the Town revival had producers with very deep pockets and who apparently didn't care how much money the show lost. That won't be the case with most shows.

Plus the Helen Hayes is a more desirable theater. No one was in a hurry to take the Lyric, but a lot of people probably want the Hayes.

It was the triple whammy of a Halloween two-performance day, the marathon and the switch to daylight savings time, which in-explicitly always causes a dip in sales.

Some have cited the Mets world series game, but I wonder how much cross-over effect that had?

extending hand to God into the fall was a huge mistake

But I'm sure the producers knew the risk. I think Forbes article reported a $270k weekly. If you take into account the grosses reported have to have 8- 10% taken off, the show has lost money all fall even if they were able to adjust the weekly nut a little lower. They probavly should have done a mini tour in some select cities in the fall and then go to London.

Not quite as uniformly dramatic drops dollar-wise, but yes.
