STARRING ACADEMY AWARD WINNER

AT THE GOLDEN THEATRE

Tickets go on sale today to the general public for the Broadway bound acclaimed new American play Eclipsed by Danai Gurira, directed by Liesl Tommy. Following a sold-out run at The Public Theater, Eclipsed will begin previews on Tuesday, February 23, 2016, with opening night set for March 6, 2016 on Broadway at the Golden Theatre (252 W. 45th Street). Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o will reprise her role on Broadway for this strictly limited engagement.

Tickets are available by visiting Telecharge.com.

This stunning, deeply moving new American play by award-winning Zimbabwean-American Playwright/Actress, Danai Gurira (co-author of In the Continuum and Michonne on AMC's hit series "The Walking Dead") features Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) returning to the stage. Amid the chaos of the Liberian Civil War, the captive wives of a rebel officer band together to form a fragile community – until the balance of their lives is upset by the arrival of a new girl. Drawing on
reserves of wit and compassion, Eclipsed reveals distinct women who must discover their own means of survival in this deeply felt portrait of women finding and testing their own strength in a hostile world of horrors not of their own making. South African born Liesl Tommy (Appropriate and The Public’s The Good Negro) directs this magnificent story of survival and resilience.

Eclipsed is produced on Broadway by Stephen Byrd, Alia Jones-Harvey, Paula Marie Black, Carole Shorenstein Hays, Willette Klausner, Michael Magers and The Public Theater.

Complete cast, creative, and additional information for Eclipsed on Broadway will be announced shortly.

“Shattering. A riveting, superbly acted production with terrific roles for five women. Lupita Nyong’o’s tremendously accomplished performance cuts to the bone. The superlative performances from all five actors, under Liesl Tommy’s sensitive direction, draws us deeply into the lives of the women. Danai Gurira’s Eclipsed flickers with glimmers of light, humanity and hope.”
(Charles Isherwood, New York Times)

“Mesmerizing and unmissable.”
(Jesse Green, New York Magazine)

“A searing drama superbly directed by Liesl Tommy and powerfully acted by a strong ensemble led by Oscar-winning Lupita Nyong’o.”
(Marilyn Stasio, Variety)

“Eclipsed pulls us into and holds us captive in a vivid world rendered with unflinching honesty, delicate poignancy and surprising humor.”
(David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter)

Ulp.
Nobody moved Lynn Nottage's RUINED to Broadway , but they moved this. Ms. Nottage must feel a little bad.
It's what makes horseraces, I guess.
Probably having such a beautiful Academy-Award winner in this play (which I feel is similar to RUINED from what I've read) made the difference. Or maybe the time is right-er. Or maybe it's a better or even a very different play.
Oh well.
Lynn Nottage has a fine career. I shouldn't feel bad for her. But I remember she did go public about her dissatisfaction with RUINED not moving to a Broadway contract.
Everyone has to deal with unrealized dreams. Thwarted ambitions.
That's what I contemplate when I saw this press release about ECLIPSED.

Maybe she's happy that this show is moving to Broadway, even if she was disappointed that Ruined didn't.

Of course the presence of a recent Oscar winner, who is having an incredible moment in her career, is a huge driving factor here. Also -- historically, The Public has long been extremely motivated to transfer their successful shows to Broadway. In the last decade or so alone: HAMILTON, FUN HOME, BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON, HAIR, THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, WELL, PASSING STRANGE, CAROLINE OR CHANGE, TOPDOG UNDERDOG, TAKE ME OUT. In contrast: aside from DOUBT, how many productions has MTC -- which produced RUINED -- transferred to Broadway from Off-Broadway?

From Newhouse and Claire tow to Broadway--disgraced, Masha, contact to name a few. This even affects membership in seeing repeat shows since only one spring and one fall Broadway production are presented by lct. I'm surprised tha mtc doesn't do it more.
