well that helps put things in perspective a bit for me. thank you. I wasn't aware of an ulterior motive when I was watching this. it's getting clearer

part of his goal was to celebrate, promote and honor the rap/spoken word form... not just create a broadway musical as I'd assumed

I don't see that as an ulterior motive. I think most composers want to celebrate/promote/honor their musical style....

Is there a composer who has written a musical whose goals don't include celebrating, promoting, and honoring the form in which he/she chooses to write?
