54 Below, anyone been recently?

Posted by: Audience 10:46 am EST 11/03/15

I've not been back since Michael Feinstein the king of the clip joints became a part of the place.

Has it changed?

I am tempted to see Melissa Manchester tomorrow but would like to hear from someone who has been recently before I buy a ticket.

54 Below is just as good if mot better since the Feinstein's "collaboration". The prices have not changed and there are plenty of discount codes (try FALL35 for 35% off Melissa Manchester). She is also on Goldstar and TDF. John the manager who is from Feinstein's at the Regency is doing a tremendous job,as are all the hosts, hostesses, servers and rest of staff. Also, Max the doorman is professional and welcoming and the sarcastic comments on this thread anger me because this place is the best NYC has to offer and is doing a great job and has always and continues to put the consumer first. I go there quite often but am not at all affiliated with the club's ownership or management (I am not a shill). Thanks for the vent and hope to see some of you there. You may also want to consider joining their Gold Club as they offer many many comps on unsold shows and it is well woth the membership price.

Upon entering, a 6' 6" muscle-bound bouncer with a nasty disposition demands you hand over all cash that you may have brought with you. He pats you down to make sure you aren't hiding anything (and is VERY thorough). If you don't have a satisfactory amount of cash on your person, they take you up the elevator to one of the floors above the theater and toss you out the window.

But other than that, nothing's changed.

As others have pointed out, Michael Feinstein did not manage or set the prices at Feinstein's at Loews Regency, and I can't imagine he managesamd/or sets the prices at his club in San Francisco. So to label him "the king of the clip joints" seems fair unfair to me, not to mention nasty.

I guess you have it in mind that lending his name to a club means he can (or should) exert pressure to keep prices low, but I don't think that's very realistic.

Also, I believe he was quoted as saying that the prices at 54 Below are not going to rise now that he is involved.

Now how can he say prices won't rise when you clearly state he didn't set prices? And saying he "lent" his name is disingenuous. I'm sure he was nicely compensated for nailing his moniker on the entrance as he will be here too. Let's see what happens in the new year.

Please don't call me "disingenuous." Of course, I didn't mean that Feinstein "lent" his name to this club or the one at the Regency with no financial arrangement. But as for him being "nicely compensated" for doing so, if you're implying that he is being paid simply for letting 54 Below use his name, I very much doubt that's true. I think it's probably much more complicated than that.

"Now how can he say prices won't rise when you clearly state he didn't set prices?"

Because, although he does not manage the room and does not set prices, he may have had a discussion before -- or after -- becoming involved at 54 Below in which it was determined that prices will not rise, hence his quote. Those are two different scenarios. Also, 54 Below is a very different place from the club at Loews Regency in several ways.

Whatever, your fear or assumption that prices at 54 Below will rise significantly just because Feinstein is now involved seems odd to me, and I'm not sure you have as clear an idea of how these clubs/deals work as you think you do.

Here's specifically what he said (full interview linked below):

The theater people are freaking that the prices at Feinstein’s/54 Below will quadruple. Will they?

Not at all. With Feinstein’s at the Regency, it was a five-star hotel and a union hotel. To open that room, there was tremendous expense. I never made money in the nightclub business. It cost $150,000 a year to set up the room—it required union people. That’s because it was that space. But we always had $20 seats because it was killing me that it was priced in a way that prevented people who didn’t have as much money to come, and that’s usually younger people for whom we have to keep this art form alive. One of the great things about 54 Below is it’s a completely different price structure and it will continue with that. Of course, if an artist commands a higher salary, the prices may be somewhat higher for that, but there’s no intention of changing the essence. We’re just adding to what already works beautifully. I’m not a fool.

Related info from an answer to a previous question:

"Much as I loved being at the Regency, that was a room that every day had to be turned into a nightclub. It took two hours to move in the stage and the piano, and then two hours to tear it down. I decided the next place would be a dedicated club."

I was there for the Micky Dolenz concert at the end of September, and other than updated signage it didn't seem any different to me as an experience (though I had only been a couple times before the Feinstein deal happened).

I was very concerned about the Feinstein announcement, but I have been a couple of times since then and everything has been as before. Let's hope it stays that way.
