Semi-Annual Second-Guessing

Posted by: ashleylm 03:46 pm EST 11/03/15

Back in town for the new season next week, and as usual am wondering if I should ditch something in favour of something better!

I'm seeing:
Dames at Sea
Fool for Love
On Your Feet
Misery
School of Rock
Color Purple
King Charles III
First Daughter Suite

and am wondering if I should drop On Your Feet (that's the iffiest one, I think) in favour of ... ? What's great that I'm missing? (Nothing from last season, I've seen those already).

Any suggestions gratefully accepted!

I did see school of Rock downtown. But my only Broadway is on your feet and Therese raquin and a repeat of Paris.

The rest are eclipse, dada woof and perfect arrangement and maybe bandstand in nj and one other.

New Broadway shows seem very sparse this fall. I have a couple of friends going in and most of what I could even suggest was from last season.

I guess it's become the norm, with the spring being crazy busy.

New Broadway shows (as distinct from revivals) are especially sparse this fall, with only about nine non-revivals all together between August and New Year's. Still, if I were visiting New York this fall, King Charles III and Allegiance would both be near the top of my list, plus Hamilton, of course.

Both would have been must see this fall on my list also. But I don't care to visit again.

Have you seen Spring Awakening? I would definitely add it to your list. And if you need to drop another one, Fool for Love, in my opinion, is one to miss.

It's an excellent list. I would stick with it.

Personally I found On Your Feet to be one of the very best of all the jukebox musicals - people around me were a sobbing mess. But even if you're not moved, the performances and production values are superb.

I've heard at best tepid things about Allegiance. If there's something on your list you might want to get rid of it's probably Fool for Love - it's very good, but at 70 minutes it's hardly a full evening of bang for your buck. Yet if there's one show you're not seeing that should be on your list, it's not that but rather The Humans or Eclipsed = but it sounds like you'll be able to catch those when they move to Broadway in the spring.

Overall I would keep this as is, on the assumption that you can get back in the spring to see the spring shows.

Over full for love. But misery probably cost more for the tickets.

Well, I have seen Nina Arianda twice before, in apparently superior vehicles ... but I haven't seen Laurie Metcalf and I really do love her.

I'm feeling inclined at this point to drop Fool for Love and pop in Allegiance in its place--I'm at heart a musical theatre junkie, and hate to miss a new piece (although I didn't see The People in the Picture, so there's a precedent!)

I can absolutely go back in the spring (and generally stay twice as long, as there's so much more then).

You should know from the description whether or not you'd like On Your Feet.

You don't have Allegiance on your list. I guess there have a number of tepid reports, but I really liked it.

But that's a great list, really - lucky you!

I'm very inclined to replace On Your Feet with Allegiance. My rubric is usually pick the original score over the jukebox musical--but I thought Allegiance was a play at the time I did the bookings, silly me.
