But the issue here isn't that he's using his position to get dates. It's that he's SELLING his second comped ticket to those dates.

Exactly.

SELLING the +1 comp ticket isn't just crossing the ethical line, it's pole-vaulting over it wearing a jetpack.

This happens in New York too. I have seen a low-level critic (who happens to post here under her own first name) standing outside the theatre trying to sell her extra ticket.

I'm not sure what you mean by "low level" but not all web reviewers are comped.

This one was, and I don't mean to turn it into a discussion of that person. Only to say I have seen a reviewer outside the theatre trying to sell her comped ticket.

I remember hearing this before. That's pretty bad.

Again, I'm not defending this critic. But the way Sherman has launched this on social media means that the salacious element is intertwined with the issue of selling the comped tickets. It's sleaze chastising sleaze.

You say you are not defending the critic, but you actually are -- by maintaining that his actions aren't worthy of coverage, you tacitly endorse allowing his practices of selling comped tickets (and selling influence) to continue. Your argument seems to hinge on your perception of this critic as small-time -- that is, not important enough to warrant excoriation. Yet a quick look at his HuffPo page shows that he is prolific and covers nearly every major and minor Seattle company. If he is telling the truth and his tickets are gratis, then he's fleecing these companies by taking free seats that they could have sold themselves and selling them for his own gain. That may not be illegal, but it is certainly unethical, and I would hope that the theaters he has covered rethink their relationships with him.

No, I began the thread by saying what the critic is doing is sleazy. That is not tacitly (silently) endorsing his actions.
