Broadway Grosses 3/12: Encouraging early previews for musical newcomers ‘War Paint’& ‘Amélie’

  • Last week, ended March 12, Broadway grosses totaled $27,675,632 for 32 shows.

    In the prior week, ended March 5, Broadway grosses totaled $23,822,900 for 28 shows.

    In the comparable week last year, Broadway grosses totaled $23,720,003 for 31 shows.




  • Broadway had a pretty good week with most shows having considerable improvement over the prior week. Four new shows started previews last week and two others started previews toward the end of the prior week. Results so far:

    —War Paint looks strong for its first 7 previews: $898,239 at an average ticket price of $110.
    — Miss Saigon looks good for last week’s 7 previews: $915,853.
    — Amélie was also good with $377,025 for 4 previews. That’s at 75% of potential gross with a good ticket average of $104.
    — Present Laughter did well with 2 previews over the weekend: $255,521 at an average admission of almost $100.
    — Sweat is off to a slow start, grossing just $266,405 (39% of potential) for a full week of 8 previews.
    — The Play That Goes Wrong played its first 4 previews and grossed $187,198 or 57% of its potential.



  • Jitney closed at the Friedman Theatre. The acclaimed Manhattan Theatre Club limited engagement of 21 previews and 62 regular performances was a not-for-profit production. Cumulative grosses were $3,598,741 at an average ticket price of $68 (MTC members receive substantial discounts). Attendance on average was 97%, paid and comped.
