To be fair to Oskar Eustis, maybe what he was thinking was: ''Gee, I love David Byrne's 'Here Lies Love'; it was a critical and box office hit for us, so perhaps lightning can strike twice.'' And even if it wasn't what he thought, I imagine it's important to support a world-class artist like Byrne.

Even if Eustis had chosen to develop another piece instead of ''Joan of Arc,'' there's no guarantee that the alternate piece would've fared better. Every show is an artistic gamble. As Singapore/Fling notes, the Public does try to develop a number of pieces. And some succeed. And some do not. A good friend worked on a piece for the Public, but after a year of rewrites, and the Public's indecision and delays, ultimately he was told to start all over.

Needless to say, we only hear about the ''success'' stories, and even that's subjective. ''Fun Home'' might've gotten to Broadway and won the Tony, but it's never worked for me. And when it just played San Francisco, I was told that it was a big disappointment at the box office.
