Looking back at the 1998 movie, I'd say it has one of the least distinguished song scores for a Disney animated movie.
Matthew Wilder and David Zippel wrote 5 tunes, and the only one I'd keep is the pretty ''Reflection.''
I was more disturbed by a report last fall that said Disney bought a spec script that would star a European thirtysomething trader who is Mulan's love interest, and that he, not Mulan, would defeat the film's villains. Disney would later say that the spec script was only ''a jumping-off point,'' and insisted that Mulan would be the lead character and that her lover would be Chinese, too.
It also would've been fun if a Chinese director, like Ang Lee, could've gotten to direct ''Mulan'' (especially since he did such a great job with ''Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon''). But Lee was too busy, so now the job has gone to Niki Caro (''Whale Rider'').
