I think you are right. The transient nature of those within my waiter's typical age-peer group works against them wanting to put roots down here (though Ithaca has many PhDs and ABDs working bagel shops--there are those who treat the place like Brigadoon). I have always lived in college towns, so I have no basis for making assertions about whether he would have better luck in either a non-college small town or a larger urban area (where his lack of a college degree could either work for or against him, I suppose), but I think you are right--many of the Cornell folk look down upon us people at the "other school" on South Hill, so I imagine that could find its way into social relationships. My husband and I joke about being in a "mixed marriage"--he a Cornell (retired) social scientist and me an Ithaca College humanist/performing artist!
