the trend of "new/old" choreography

I haven't seen the current Hello, Dolly, but I keep hearing how closely Mr. Carlyle's choreography hews to Mr. Champion's original, with a step or two altered here just so it's not an exact replica. It's deja vu from last year's Cats where after seeing it I thought the same thing about Mr. Blankenbuehler v. Ms. Lynne.

In both cases I adore the original work, but wouldn't audiences and shows be better served by letting the newer generation of choreographers find their own style/movement? I'm not a fan of this "same-but-different" style of creating art.
